Wolfram von den Steinen translates the Hymns, in part, antiphonally, thus syllable for syllable, in part into the clear German prose of his day. My approach is different. The translation is, to the best of my knowledge, accurate with regard to the Latin, and the arrangement is by sentence, not by strophe and antistrophe. (That may be a future project.) However, I attempt a style of English that might recall the recusant Church of an earlier age. I have no wish to be obscure; nor do I spare the reader difficulty, and if a Hymn must be read twice or thrice, it is by intent: I would like to believe the pace of reading (aloud) slowed to reflect that of the sustained melismata on the Alleluia for which Notker composed it. The Hymns should be turned over in heart and mind, in much the same way as hands do honour to the manuscripts in which they survive. In short, I will be delighted if these little exercises in translation serve to free Gentle Reader from the tyranny of the pedestrian English of the present age, that he might join himself to the Monk of St. Gall, beyond century and continent, not only in studying but also in praying these Hymns.
